ABOUT THE EP
Deep Ringo (EP)— Tape Lab
Released: March 25, 2019
Runtime: 6 Songs, 10 Minutes
Recorded live in Graham, North Carolina, Deep Ringo captures Tape Lab in its early, instinctive jam-session mode: loose, funny, rhythmic, and completely locked into the strange magic of the moment. Built around Kaossilator textures, Yamaha keyboard sounds, and a deep appreciation for Ringo Starr’s famously steady, feel-first drum style, the album moves with a powerfully simple pulse from the opening track, “Ringo Beat Big Time.” What begins with a calm, almost ’90s corporate training video vibe quickly slides into driving dance beats, playful techno, and the unmistakable early Tape Lab sound: record everything, let it ride, then trim the best parts into shape.
Made in a single night during the Graham, NC era—back in the Twisted Tea days—Deep Ringo feels like a snapshot of Tape Lab before the mythology got too organized. You can hear the laughter in the grooves, the looseness in the transitions, and the joy of making electronic music without overthinking it. A sister album to Mushroom for Improvement, Deep Ringo also nods to its original mushroom-themed identity with cover art featuring Ringo surrounded by mushrooms. For fans of Tape Lab’s live recordings, DIY electronic music, cassette culture, outsider techno, and experimental jam-based albums, Deep Ringo is a clean hit of classic Tape Lab energy: weird, warm, rhythmic, and fully committed to the bit.
