TAPE LAB

Welcome to #TapeLab—stay a while and listen. Founded in 2017 by lifelong friends, Tape Lab is a collective of artists and a hub for innovation, always open to collaboration.

With the zeal of a self-published memoir, our sound is our own, but you can be the decider. We make music and art that sounds like it was fun to make and stands out in a sea of bland beats.

As independent artists, we are always exploring new ways to expand our audience and find new creative outlets—especially with other undiscovered artists!

Tape Lab is currently based out of two headquarters in

Durham, NC and The Hamptons, NY.

Tape Lab Manifesto

An underground leader in tape-based media, cassette culture, and independent sound.

Tape Lab is an independent tape-based record label and band—built for people who still believe music should be physical, personal, and a little bit mythic. We don’t treat “cassette culture” as a trend. For us, Tapes are a living format: something you can collect, trade, archive, and build community around.

For nearly 10 years, Tape Lab has released music and tape-based media with a simple bias: make it real, make it memorable, make it worth keeping.

Tape is a medium, not a nostalgia act.

What We Are

Tape Lab is where underground music meets tape artifacts—the releases, the packaging, the lore, the documentation, the long memory.

  • Independent tape-based record label + band

  • Nearly 10 years active

  • 700+ songs released

  • Global distribution with listeners around the world

  • Based between Durham, North Carolina, and the Hamptons, New York

Proof > Hype

Tape Lab’s catalog is deep, weird, and intentionally expansive—because the underground isn’t supposed to be tidy.

  • 700+ songs released across a decade of work

  • A strong listener base in India, catalyzed by our TikTok single Jamalotov

  • Featured on a radio show in Stereofield Trip CJLO 1690 AM Ontario, Canada

  • Music appearing in the 2025 film project You’re Not Well

We collaborate because we like chemistry—and because scenes are built, not claimed. Past collaborators include: 2yng2smpl, CD+, SPNF!N!TY, The Binky, Sausagenius, and Ojala.

A cassette is proof-of-work. It slows you down in a good way. It makes you listen with intention.

The Lore, Made Physical

We’ve published a Tape Lab LORE BOOK—a heavy, physical archive that weighs more than 4 pounds—because we take documentation seriously. The underground deserves records. Not just posts.

Tape Lab turns music back into an object—something that can live on a shelf, get passed between friends, and carry a story beyond the feed.

We believe:

  • Tape-based media matters because it restores context—artwork, sequencing, and the feeling of “an actual release.”

  • Underground culture stays alive through documentation: releases, liner notes, cataloging, archives, and scene-building.

  • The artifact is the message. If it doesn’t feel like something you’d keep, it’s not finished.

What We’re Building Next

More releases. More tape-based media. More collaborations across sound, film, and physical artifacts. Tape Lab is always open to the right project—especially when it respects the format and the story.

If you’re a filmmaker, artist, label, or collaborator and you’re working on something that belongs in the real world (not just online), we should talk.
