ABOUT THE EP

ChronoCross Fit (EP)— Tape Lab

Released May 9, 2019

Playstationary One Vol. 2: ChronoCross Fit is the second entry in Tape Lab’s PlayStationary series, getting back on the game system and digging into some of the best PS1-era music ever put to disc: the Chrono Cross OST by Yasunori Mitsuda.

The release is short, strange, and fully locked into that half-nostalgic, half-haunted video game zone. “ChronoCross Fit” leads the pack as the main single, stretching the RPG influence into something rhythmic, playful, and a little too committed to the bit. Naturally.

Then there is “Animals Across,” where the Animal Crossing samples come through unexpectedly haunting and kind of weird — which is the correct way for cute game audio to behave when Tape Lab gets involved. “Village to the East” sneaks in a little DBZ energy for the Gohan lovers, sending it all the way from the village directly into your brain. Sorry, that is where it lives now.

Across three tracks, ChronoCross Fit plays like a mini tape cartridge: PS1 memory card dust, chopped game samples, underground grooves, and the usual Tape Lab instinct to turn a reference into a rhythm before anyone can stop it.

Featuring “ChronoCross Fit,” “Animals Across,” and “Village to the East.”
