Flake Around and Find Out

ABOUT THE EP

FLAKES — Tape Lab

Released February 5, 2019

During the #ReluxRewind process, we added samples from Jiffrinson Ramsay and Bobby Bowfinger. The comedic timing is on point. As always, the remastering process is more about removing compression and EQ mistakes more than adding new FX.

*A note about naming: Unfortunately, we forgot to use the names from the Flakes YouTube video. Admittedly, they are superior.

Original Release

Like much of our earliest releases, the original FLAKES EP was improvised and recorded live with a Korg Kaosillator and Yamaha PSR-720. You can hear the awesome drum fills from CD+ throughout. This is the real birth of the Tape Lab #YamahaCowboy, which is a recurrent style throughout our music.

Following up on our Goliath first release, FLATEND DEMOS, the FLAKES EP is, thankfully, not recorded directly onto tape. There are lots of similarities between our recording/editing methods, but the fidelity is much improved.

TRACKLIST:

  1. Flake it —  I've had a few accidents. Put it in gear with melodic car flybys and bouncing Kaos bass. Sets the tone for the album with spaced-out beats and catchy melodies.

  2. Major Boost — Melancholic, restrained, plucky. "Gosh, I've really been hoping to get a career running errands. That would be a major boost for me."

  3. Cowbouyant — Past the laughter, the Cowboy Anthem BOUNCES and BUSTS in. #CornHorn CD+ absolutely just jamming the crisp bassline from CD+.

  4. FL4KESWould you be willing to cut your hair? Smooth pop song - most likely the Single. Love the chord progression here. Especially in the bridge.

  5. Alright:AwesomeWhat did you say your name was? Staccato, plucky and funky - there is a great pocket with the glitching drums, booming bass, and strings. The drop at the midpoint is CLASSIC #TapeLab

  6. Awesome:AlrightJust one more question. Fine, the naming convention for this is confusing. The fake guitars are shining alright. More upbeat and funky - and the synth is grooooovin'.

  7. Flakes OutMy friends call me Jiff. What a ride it's been; this outro is simple and clean.
