ABOUT THE ALBUM
SMPLcity (Album)— Tape Lab & 2yng2smpl
Released February 22, 2022
SMPLcity is a 12-track full-length EP from Tape Lab, built from underground grooves, loose sketches, B-sides, rarities, and other bits of LOST MEDIA that probably should have stayed buried — but didn’t.
The release is bookended by two great FARGO-themed tracks, including “Go Bears!”, setting the tone with the kind of weird regional energy that makes perfect sense if you do not explain it too much. This is not a polished “statement record.” It is more like a recovered hard drive with a pulse.
At the center of the release is “I Don’t Think We Need to Talk,” the single from the project and the first song 2yng2smpl actually feels proud of. Dangerous precedent, honestly. It is direct, catchy, and carries the rough emotional weight of something that was not overthought into dust.
Elsewhere, tracks like “Programs,” “Sham,” and “reNude Tradition” keep things short, strange, and memorable — little ditties with enough groove to justify their existence and enough weirdness to keep them from acting respectable.
SMPLcity is underground Tape Lab material in full junk-drawer mode: danceable, odd, catchy, half-lost, half-found, and better for not pretending to be clean.
Featuring the single “I Don’t Think We Need to Talk.”
