The first entry in Tape Lab’s Playstationary Series stands as a standard-bearer for the frenetic, didn’t-see-that-coming ethos at the heart of the project. Built around video game music, sample-based collage, and a deep love for PlayStation-era atmosphere, the release captures the strange magic of late-’90s and early-2000s gaming culture without turning into simple nostalgia.

This is Tape Lab operating in full digital-chaos mode: fast cuts, surreal textures, dramatic voices, warped rhythms, and the feeling that a boss battle, loading screen, and late-night basement recording session have all collapsed into one unstable file. The sound pulls from the emotional intensity of Japanese role-playing games, the cinematic punch of fighting games, and the raw weirdness of Saturday morning animation.

The samples are key. The release features the iconic Soul Calibur IV narrator, a great sample from Jade Cocoon, and material from The Adventures of Batman & Robin. Together, they give the project a strange mythic energy: part arcade cabinet, part fantasy RPG, part cartoon transmission from a half-remembered console.
