ABOUT THE EP
Juxtaposer (Album)— Tape Lab
Released: November 30, 2019
Runtime: 4 Tracks (8:16 Minutes)
Behind Mind Head is a 4-track Tape Lab EP built around the strange, paranoid brilliance of Bowfinger and its fictional belief system, MindHead. In the film, Kit Ramsey, played by Eddie Murphy, is a neurotic Hollywood star whose fear, ego, and celebrity isolation are filtered through MindHead, a self-help religion/cult often described by critics as a Scientology-like satire of Hollywood belief systems. That makes Behind Mind Head a perfect Tape Lab concept: funny on the surface, weirdly deep underneath, and full of strange little questions about control, performance, identity, and who gets to tell you what is happening inside your own head.
Recorded entirely live in Efland, Behind Mind Head is also a strong entry point for anyone who wants to hear how sharp CD+ can be lyrically. The Bowfinger samples give the EP its cult-comedy frame, but the writing pushes the idea further: “Can you think my thoughts for me, I need to mind my head / Inside behind my mind is behind my head.” It is absurd, yes—but it also lands as a miniature thesis on influence, repetition, and mental outsourcing. Like MindHead itself, the EP plays with the promise of enlightenment while exposing the loop underneath: people looking for answers, systems selling certainty, and Tape Lab turning the whole thing into live, experimental, sample-driven underground music.
