ABOUT THE EP
Worst Practice (EP)— Tape Lab
Released: March 3, 2024
Runtime: 4 Tracks (21:02 minutes)
Worst Practice by Tape Lab feat. 2yng2smpl is a self-deprecating, danceable, and deeply Tape Lab release about the accidental art of making duplicate song files—and then ruining the whole point by editing both versions anyway. Recorded in mid-2023 as 2yng2smpl’s return-to-the-studio effort, the project captures the messy beauty of alternate takes, remastered versions, live collaboration, and the kind of underground tape-beat logic that only makes sense after a few listens.
The concept is simple: two songs, multiple versions, and no promise that the “right” one is obvious. In the spirit of albums like The Flaming Lips’ The Soft Bulletin, where alternate versions sit side by side and dare listeners to care about the difference, Worst Practice invites you to choose your favorite—or your least favorite. Either way, the bad practice becomes the whole point.
“Wut Bwings Us” nods to the legendary preacher cadence from The Princess Bride, though the lyrics never quite made it in. What did make it in: driving, upbeat, danceable energy, with the remastered edition landing as the stronger cut. “Oscillately” moves into weirder, more esoteric territory, with crunchy drums, an addictive synth line, and background textures that feel a little Sigur Rós-adjacent. One version gets extra bass from Joe, giving the song a stronger lead presence, while the alternate version stretches into a spacier mix with added reverb and atmosphere.
For fans of Tape Lab, 2yng2smpl, underground tape beats, alternate versions, remastered tracks, experimental electronic music, crunchy drums, cassette culture, danceable studio jams, and 2023 Tape Lab releases, Worst Practice turns a bad editing habit into a surprisingly good reason to press play again.
