ABOUT THE EP

Selphonyness (EP)— Tape Lab

Released July 29, 2024
Runtime: 5 songs, 17:13 minutes
Genre: Electronic/IDM

Selphonyness turns a Tape Lab jam session into a curated collection of phone-related beats, dial-up jokes, mobile-era wordplay, and sincerity hiding in plain sight. The theme may be loosely held together by phones, but the real throughline is classic Tape Lab: odd names, playful concepts, experimental grooves, and a surprisingly sincere question underneath it all—do you like being yourself, and are you any good at it?

preDial opens the line with a Tape Lab definition nobody asked for but everyone needed: call them back before they get the chance to call you first. “I hit her up with a preDial but the line was disconnected.” It is anxious, funny, and weirdly accurate.

T9teen leans into old-school texting nostalgia, back when dating was slower, stranger, and somehow more emotionally survivable without a QWERTY keyboard. If you know someone addicted to T9 texting, show them Tape Lab instead.

LAN Mine keeps the communication theme moving into networked territory, suggesting a digital-age trapdoor of connection, confusion, and underground beat-making. Across the collection, Selphonyness feels like a lost mobile device full of strange voice memos, half-finished jokes, jam-session gold, and phone-era nostalgia.

For fans of experimental tape beats, phone nostalgia, T9 texting, cassette culture, underground jam sessions, analog electronic music, and weirdly sincere Tape Lab releases, Selphonyness is both a joke and not a joke—which is usually where Tape Lab does its best work.
