ABOUT THE ALBUM
preLux (Album)— Tape Lab
Released December 28, 2021
preLux stands as one of Tape Lab’s most celebrated albums, a strange, joyful, fully locked-in release that feels both wildly specific and surprisingly universal. It is funny, melodic, danceable, and deeply Tape Lab: a record where viral oddities, beachy grooves, anime references, reggae smoothness, and left-field club logic all somehow belong in the same orbit.
The album includes “Jamalotov,” a standout track that has found viral traction in India, proving once again that Tape Lab’s signal travels in mysterious and excellent ways. “Hips & Nips” is the ultimate Always Sunny in Philadelphia Rickety Cricket anthem, equal parts ridiculous and weirdly heroic. “National Genagraphic” cannot be beaten as a smooth reggae jam, gliding through the album with an easy confidence that feels instantly classic.
Then there is “Pikmania,” one of Tape Lab’s best songs ever, featuring a true CD+ masterpiece performance. “A Baoa Qu” is fantastic in its own right, adding another layer of mythic, off-center energy to the album’s already loaded atmosphere. And on “Fuchikomatose,” an homage to Ghost in the Shell, Schuyler absolutely crushes, bringing force, character, and cybernetic weirdness to one of the album’s most memorable moments.
As a full release, preLux feels like Tape Lab at a creative peak: confident but still chaotic, polished enough to hit, and strange enough to stay interesting. It is a fan favorite for a reason.
